Foxfi and 4.4.2

I am currently still on the stock NC1 update. I was curious if anyone has tried foxfi on stock 4.4.2 before I update, or if I should just update, and root with towelroot to gain tethering capabilities. Opinions please.

[Q] Stock 4.4.4

Hi all, it's been awhile since I've done any ROM flashing (older phones) so I'm a little rusty now. I'm currently root, unlocked, CWM with stock 4.1.2 (never flashed any custom ROMs on my S3). I'm wanting to get closet to stock 4.4.4 as possible. Can I use the Nexus 5 4.4.4 firmware on my phone? Or will it not work due to it being GSM?

If this won't work, can anyone recommend a ROM of the latest android version that is closest to stock as possible? Thanks.

Fried my S3, locked replacement

I fried my last S3 with a USB OTG flash memory reader, and I'm trying to use the replacement as I would my CM 11 device.

So far, I find that I can root (thx geohot), but AOSP is out of the question. The other primary function my phone serves is as a WiFi tether. I have not had luck finding an app that is not broken or limited in some way. Help!

OK, so I herped when I should have derped. I rooted with the towel and used ROM Manager to flash recovery. Oops.

Well, I want to restore stock recovery to update OTA and try safestrap to flash a custom TWRP ROM, but JOdin refuses to work on my *buntu machine.

Any suggestions? Is there an APK to remove custom recovery?

CleanROM 8.2 tech support

...........I understand that @scrosler has recently retired (he will be missed) and closed\locked his CleanROM Thread. Alot of us still use it and it can still be downloaded from his link so can we have a Thread for tech support for the ROM that others like myself can reach out to people and help them without breaking any of the forum rules or stepping on "scrosler's" work?

TouchWiz 4.4 Download List

This is everything that can currently be flashed on the 4.4 update without bricking your device. Which is unfortunately not very much :(.

I will keep this up to date as much as possible. Post in this thread or PM me if you think something should be added to the list. This can include anything (roms, themes, mods, etc.) that will work for anyone with a locked bootloader using safestrap on 4.4.

[Solution] For everyone suffering excessive battery drain since the KitKat update-

I'm pretty sure I found the culprit of the excessive battery drain for at least my Verizon GS3. I'm fully stock, unrooted, and did a factory reset after the 4.4.2 update. My battery has been terrible since the first KitKat update with Google Services or Google Play services being the top user in battery stats, usually around 40-50%. KitKat brought the "OK Google" voice command feature to our phones. So now, they are constantly listening for that prompt. If you go to Google Now>Settings>Voice>"OK Google" hotword detection>turn off, you should see a marked improvement in your battery. Since yesterday, my battery has been pretty much back to normal, and Google services went from 40% battery usage to 15% as of right now. Hope this helps!

Locked Bootloader Rant (4.4.2)

TouchWiz is not the most horrid operating system I've run (it still isn't superb), but all the same, I'd rather be running pure AOSP (Android Open Source Project), but we need unlocked bootloaders. Come on Verizon, stop sucking! It is my phone and I ought to be able to do what I please with it. Imagine if you bought a fridge from the biggest and most powerful fridge manufacturer (Verizon) only to find out you were only allowed to put strawberries in it. Of all the foods in the entire world, the fridge manufacturer only allows strawberries in the fridge. Sure, it might be fine at first, but what happens when you want to make the fridge your own? As soon as you put a food other than strawberries in said fridge only to find the doors lock and the fridge stops working entirely. Now your fridge is useless because you wanted to support other people and make the fridge your own. If the farmers of the world want to survive, they need to strike deals with the fridge manufacturer in order to get their foods into the fridges. This is a monopoly. There is zero competition; everyone is at the mercy of the fridge manufacturer. This is what Verizon is doing with their phones. Either the developers give in to Verizon's insane demands (money and horrible contracts) to get the software on the phone, or they die out entirely and nobody ever remembers the developers even existed. Sure Verizon offers "Developer Edition" devices, but developers can't have a user base if users cannot install their software. What is the point of developing software for a device if nobody can use it? I'm just saying this is absolute garbage, and we should not take any more of it. Thoughts?

[Q] GPS Issues on all ROMS

$

Hello all,

I'm having issues getting GPS to lock on every rom. Be it AOSP or TW based, my GPS has trouble locking and updating. Often times in Google Maps and Waze it looks as though the arrow is facing 90 degrees in the opposite direction. Another problem is that after the GPS locks, it then does not update as frequently as it should causing the arrow to stay in one place on Maps and it can take minutes to update with your new position.

Has anyone else been experiencing this?

My baseband version is VRUCML1

And my location settings have been set for high accuracy.

[Q] Quick Question about how the locked bootloader effects roms

$

I've been working on some stuff on my own but I am stimm pretty vanilla about android development in general (although that doesnt mean I havent developed anything else). Anyhow, I just wanted to ask exactly what effect the bootloader has on installing roms and such. I realize that this prevents anything besides touchwiz roms but I would like to know the in depth. It is my understanding that a stock kernel is required but what else?

Disabling update notifications and auto download of KitKat on 4.3

Just in case anyone ran into the situation I did - I am still on 4.3 because I bought my S3 off of someone who had it sitting around for a while. I had a Droid Razr M on Kitkat and the battery went ka-poot. I finally bit the bullet and bought a phone with a screen that actually lets me type with two hands comfortably. I was hellbent on avoiding the KK update altogether.
my phone: Verizon Galaxy S III i535 (not sure if this would work on the S III from other providers, I imagine it would though)

To disable the update notifications and stop it from auto downloading:
1) root the phone using towelroot xda towelroot thread and towelroot download
2) install a file browser with root capabilities; I have always used Root Browser by JRummy
3) using the file browser, navigate to /system/app and rename two files (provide root access when it prompts for it):
FWupgrade.apk to FWupgrade.bak
SDM.apk to SDM.bak
--- that has fixed the "we want you to take this crappy update" notifications for me. now if your phone has already downloaded the firmware (400mb file) this is how to remove it:
4) navigate to /cache/fota/ and delete "update.zip"

That has fixed the annoying issue of it wanting to update every day and freed up some space too. I hope this helps someone else out!
